What’s Considered Normal?

A normal blood pressure reading is usually around 120/80 mmHg.


If your blood pressure consistently rises above 140/90 mmHg, your care provider may monitor you more closely.


Even if you feel fine, high blood pressure can sneak in quietly, often with no symptoms. That’s why regular checks are so important.


Warning Signs to Watch For

In addition to regular monitoring at prenatal appointments, let your care provider know right away if you notice:


Persistent headaches

Vision changes (blurred vision, seeing spots)

Swelling in your hands, face, or eyes

Upper abdominal pain (especially under the ribs)

Sudden weight gain

Shortness of breath


These can be signs of preeclampsia, and early detection saves lives.


How Often Should You Check?


During prenatal visits, your provider will check your blood pressure each time.


If you have a history of high blood pressure or other risk factors, your provider may recommend at-home monitoring with a cuff.


Always follow your provider’s guidance and trust your instincts if something feels off.
