Pregnancy is full of changes in your body, your emotions, and your everyday life. Amid the excitement (and occasional overwhelm), it’s easy to overlook one important number: your blood pressure.
But this simple measurement can offer big clues about your health and your baby’s wellbeing.
At Community Motherhood, we believe in empowering moms with knowledge. Understanding your blood pressure during pregnancy is one of the most important, and often overlooked, ways to protect yourself and your growing baby.
Why Blood Pressure Matters in Pregnancy
Blood pressure is a measure of the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. During pregnancy, your body is working overtime, and that includes your heart and circulatory system.
While some changes in blood pressure are normal, high blood pressure (also called hypertension) can put you at risk for serious complications, including:
Preeclampsia (a dangerous condition involving high blood pressure and organ stress)
Placental problems
Preterm birth
Low birth weight
Stroke or seizures (in severe cases)
What’s Considered Normal?
A normal blood pressure reading is usually around 120/80 mmHg.
If your blood pressure consistently rises above 140/90 mmHg, your care provider may monitor you more closely.
Even if you feel fine, high blood pressure can sneak in quietly, often with no symptoms. That’s why regular checks are so important.
Warning Signs to Watch For
In addition to regular monitoring at prenatal appointments, let your care provider know right away if you notice:
Persistent headaches
Vision changes (blurred vision, seeing spots)
Swelling in your hands, face, or eyes
Upper abdominal pain (especially under the ribs)
Sudden weight gain
Shortness of breath
These can be signs of preeclampsia, and early detection saves lives.
How Often Should You Check?
During prenatal visits, your provider will check your blood pressure each time.
If you have a history of high blood pressure or other risk factors, your provider may recommend at-home monitoring with a cuff.
Always follow your provider’s guidance and trust your instincts if something feels off.
You Deserve Safe, Supported Care
Monitoring your blood pressure isn’t about creating fear, it’s about offering you peace of mind and protection. It’s one more way to stay connected to your body and advocate for the care you deserve.
If you ever feel dismissed or unsure, know this: You have the right to ask questions. You have the right to be heard. You have the right to feel safe.
Gentle Encouragement for the Journey
You’re not expected to know everything. Pregnancy is a time of learning, listening, and leaning into support. Keeping an eye on your blood pressure is one of the most proactive things you can do, for both your health and your baby’s.
At Community Motherhood, we walk with you through every step (from routine checks to unexpected twists). Because you shouldn’t have to navigate it all alone.
So here’s your gentle reminder, mama: Check your blood pressure. Know your numbers. Protect your peace. You and your baby are worth it.
